A walk in the life...

Clare Fallon, our Assistant Environment & Sustainability Officer (who you may know from such initiatives as Fairtrade and the Wallness Lane Clean Up) walks to work every day.
Clare's provided us with info and photos from her daily journey to the University, which makes for an interesting read!

Try more sustainable fish for free today - Switch the Fish!

Mackerel - a more sustainable choice
Today (Friday 17th) you can try some more sustainable alternatives to your usual fish choice for FREE! The offer is being run by Sainsbury's – the UK's largest retailer of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified fish and seafood products – who are offering customers asking for one of the 'Big Five' an alternative, lesser known species to try out free.

Suppliers will largely bear the cost of the drive to encourage shoppers to broaden their fish repertoire and try out little-known but sustainable species – coley, pouting and megrim, rainbow trout and mackerel. Shoppers will be targeted at the chain's 387 UK stores with fresh fish counters through the new 'Switch the Fish' campaign which will also feature regional roadshows and recipes.

Check the Sainbury's website for details and for recipes by Jamie Oliver.

Join the nationwide bug hunt!

The Bugs Count survey is now open so what a great excuse to get outside and discover the incredible variety of invertebrates that make their home around us.

The survey involves finding as many bugs as you can in the timed challenges and keeping a special eye out for the six Species Quest bugs.

Your findings will help scientists learn more about the distribution of invertebrates across the country and how the urban environment may be affecting them.

There are online guides and field notebooks to help you so get involved today!

To find out more see:

If you are interested in completing the survey on the University campus please contact the Environment and Sustainability Team at eps-sustainability@salford.ac.uk

Bags of success at Wallness Lane Tidy Up!

Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Martin Hall, along with colleagues from Student Life and the Environment & Sustainability team, in Estates, led a clean-up campaign on the area around Wallness Lane yesterday.

This first clean-up event which took place on the afternoon of the 7 June, removed over 100kg of litter from the area!

Although not owned or managed by the University, the area around Wallness Lane, which is located between Northern car park and Frederick Road, is regularly used as a through route by colleagues and students.

We were really pleased with the number of students and colleagues offering their time to this project. As the final total showed, the volunteer’s enthusiasm really made a difference to this environment! Well done and thanks to all who took part, we hope you enjoyed the cakes afterwards!

In line with our Environment and Sustainability Strategy, we hope to work with Salford City Council and the local community to improve this space further. Look out for further similar events in the Autumn term!

What a jump in the Green League!

The People and Planet Green League 2011 was published yesterday in The Guardian and Salford have climbed a whopping 85 places from 122nd to 37th! We're now classified at the top of the 2:1 category.

The Green League is produced by the student-run organisation, People and Planet, annually and has been operating since 2007. The Green League score is calculated against  the following criteria:
1) Environmental Policy
2) Environmental Staff
3) Environmental Management & Audit
4) Carbon Management Strategy
5) Ethical Procurement & Fairtrade
                    6) Ethical Investment
                    7) Sustainable Food
                    8) Student & Staff Engagement
                    9) Sustainability in the Curriculum
                    10) Renewable Energy Performance
                    11) Waste Recycling Performance
                    12) Carbon Reductions Performance
                   13) Water Consumption Performance

One of our strongest categories was environmental staff. Over the past year the University has developed a core team dedicated to addressing environmental sustainability of the University’s activities. Other strong categories include carbon emissions reduction and staff and student engagement. The University has demonstrated commitment with the launch of a Carbon Management Plan and ambitious targets to reduce emissions by 43% by 2020 from 2005/6 emission levels. Initiatives to achieve this include improving lighting across the campus, reducing the impacts from IT equipment and replacing old plant and equipment, many of which have already achieved results.

Other recent initiatives include;
o   Awarded Fairtrade Status Jan 2011
o   Achieved Bronze EcoCampus award this year and on track to gain the Silver award later this year
o   Launch of Sustainable Food and Healthy Eating Policies and initiatives including a Love Food Hate Waste Student Masterchef competition
o   Launch of staff Green Representative network
o   Student Union maintained Bronze Award in NUS Green Impact Union Awards

As well as the core team a wide group of people have helped ensure our success; those in the Carbon Management Programme Board and Project Team, Fairtrade Action Group, Biodiversity Working Group and Green Representatives. Thanks for your involvement and support for the environmental sustainability programmes before and, particularly, during this year!

We are very pleased to have our commitment and work in this area recognised; however, we recognise that the challenge will be to maintain this going forward!
